Neil Blomkamp

Neil Blomkamp is capable of some amazing things. As a director, he can put out a film that looks like it cost three times as much. When he uses special effects, he does something very few know how to do. He ignores them. Just as the hazy ship in District 9 is barely noticed, we accept it as being there. It also furthers the believably factor when our noses aren't being pushed into it, meaning we're not spending half the film wondering whether or not the effects are good enough. His student film Alive in Joburg is a good demonstration of his film making tactics.

Ben Burtt

Probably the most iconic sound designers of all time, Ben Burtt is the man responsible for the sound design of Star Wars, E.T. and Wall-E. Yes folks, the most iconic characters in sci fi are memorable because of him. Oh yeah, and these too:

Quinn

I am well aware of how popular it is to dislike the YBA's out of sheer jealosy,  but I find Marc Quinn's Self to be incredible in how it asks the question "is it an extension of him or a self portrait? Even if an unfortunate percentage of his work is not to my taste, Self remains a fantastic piece.Mandatory Website Thanks to Wikipedia for the image:

Dario Robleto

I first heard about Robleto while in space, finding that sometimes the materials used ended up meaning more to me than the actual product they came to produce. In less cryptic terms, the materials and the story behind them made what seemed to be an average product and made it significantly more special. His works can be seen at ACME. Daft Punk

Daft Punk would be the first entry in this blog...  Their catchy mix of science fiction "robot culture" along with clever beats and a strong appreciation for more... analog, styles of music is the reason why they are always playing while I'm working. They're also on MySpace. Image courtesy of Wikipedia.
